The written test, also known as the knowledge exam, is required for new drivers who are ready to start driving. This is the first step you need to take in order to start driving. You will be allowed to take the written test at the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) or at your high school if it is offered. This exam requires you study before taking it in order to have a better chance of passing. You will need to pass the written test with an 80% or higher in order to get your learner’s permit. There are 50 total questions on the written test which means you will have to get at least 40 out of the 50 questions correct in order to pass. You can use the online version of the New Jersey Driver Manual as a tool in order to pass the test. If you don’t pass the written test there is a minimum 1 week waiting period before you can take it again which will give you more time to prepare.

In order to get your New Jersey Learners Permit you must also pass the vision test. It is completed after passing the written exam and usually takes a short amount of time to do. The vision test is very simple and only evaluates your vision so if you wear glasses or contacts be sure to bring them with you to the Motor Vehicle Commission. One you pass the written and vision test you will be ready to start your 6 Hour “Learner’s Permit” Program.
